Volunteering, a way to meet others

VOLUNTEER WEEK ADVERTISING FEATURE
Thames Museum Te Whare Taonga o te Kauaeranga collects, safeguards and displays taonga and artefacts relating to the history of our district, from Hikutaia to Waikawau.
Our Taonga Māori Gallery was created in 2022 in consultation with Ngāti Maru iwi and is a special space for learning and reflection for visitors from all around the world.
Other displays cover early pioneer settlement from the goldrush era, and further development up to the 1970s. Special features include the history of Thames Hospital and Nursing School; commemoration of those who served during World War I and II, with medals, letters and uniforms; and unique to us, the Ted Egan Building Thames Gallery which showcases models of many fine buildings from the town’s heyday.
Other displays highlight pioneer domestic life, early transport, local schools and sports, our iron foundries, and more.
Our volunteers enjoy welcoming visitors to the museum. We are open six days a week, 10am to 1pm and volunteers can choose to join the roster from once a month or more. Full training is given and no, nobody needs to know the district’s full history! In fact, many of our volunteers are recently retired to Thames and volunteering with us is the perfect way to meet people and learn about the district while helping us to keep our history vibrant and accessible all year round.
If you would like to join our team, pop in for a chat. We’re a friendly bunch and will be delighted to meet you.
