The “resounding success” of last year’s Knit a Square initiative inspired Age Concern Hauraki Coromandel’s vision for their upcoming event.
The group invites community members to celebrate the International Day of the Older Person on October 1 at the Thames Civic Centre with the Flowers for Friendship initiative.
Age Concern Hauraki Coromandel team lead Jo Sanderson said people from around the community made flowers from different mediums such as wool, paper and flax, which would be on display at the upcoming celebration.
One group who made and donated flowers was Whenuakite School.
“We are going to have all the flowers made arranged in vases around the hall for people to come and see, then we will give these out to people at the end who have attended, and around our communities,” Jo said.
“The Piki te Ora Team from Te Korowai Hauora o Hauraki will be there, doing free health checks and sharing information about the services on offer.”
Throughout the morning there will be dance displays from various dance groups in the area, and people will have the opportunity to join in too.
“Come along between 10am and 12pm for morning tea and a look around, and also at 9.20am something is happening outside the Info centre where the bus stops.”
