Punky parlour games

Steampunk enthusiasts gathered in Thames on June 14 to celebrate International Steampunk Day.

The day kicked off with parlour games at the Salvation Army Hall, with participating clubs vying for the inaugural Steampunk Parlour Games Championship Trophy.

Members from The Air Krackens in Auckland, Kraken’s Lair in Whangārei, Cambridge’s Treetown Steamers, Steampunk Tauranga and Hamilton’s Waipa Steamers joined the Thames club to participate in the “silly” games.

Steampunk the Thames president Caroline Thomas said the parlour games were chosen for their fun and silliness.

Tokens were awarded to winners of the games, which included Banana Joe, Bedbugs, air hockey, giant dominoes, Pictureka, Bucking Broncos, Tiddlywinks, Hungry Shark and more.

The day was rounded off with Glowing Escapades at 5pm, a promenade down Thames’ Pollen St in illuminated costumes.

Caroline said the event was a fun way for steampunkers to get together mid-year.

The committee is now looking ahead to its November Steampunk Festival, which will also mark the group’s 10-year anniversary. The theme for November’s event is “Steampunk It Your Way”.
