Inaugural Paeroa Crop Swap a success

The first Paeroa Crop Swap, Share and Learn event kicked off on May 31 with around 30 people equipped with goods to share.
Organiser Teresa Tosi told The Profile she was “absolutely thrilled” with how it all went.
“The tables were full of fruit, vegetables, seedlings, seeds, preserves, baking and gardening items, and it was wonderful to see people sharing so generously with each other.”
People also popped in to drop off items even though they couldn’t stay for the event.
“What I loved most was seeing people connect. Some came for the produce, some [came] for the gardening knowledge, and others simply to meet like-minded people.”

One attendee told Teresa: “I think I’ve found my people”, which she found humbling and really summed up the atmosphere of the day.
“The short presentation I gave on growing food in pots and fabric grow bags was well received and it was encouraging to hear how informative people found it and a few ordering grow bags to get started,” she said.
“One of the biggest highlights for me personally was making new connections and friendships with people who share the same interests and passion for growing food, sustainability and community and a couple of them have offered to help out with future swaps.”

The group was also able to make sure nothing went to waste, with surplus produce donated to the Pataka Kai on Taylor Ave, Paeroa, and a local kindergarten, she said.
“Looking ahead, I’d love to see the Crop Swap continue to grow into a regular community gathering where people can share produce, plants, seeds, skills and knowledge.
“Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just getting started, there is something for everyone.”
Teresa said the goal was always simple – to reduce waste, share abundance, help people learn to grow food and bring community together.
“I feel our first event achieved exactly that.”
