It’s almost time for the people across Hauraki and beyond to head along to the Paeroa Little Theatre’s upcoming show.
From September 9 to 13, the community will have the opportunity to witness the chaos, laughter, stories and “a little payback” in Crazy Ladies by Devon Williamson and directed by Paeroa Little Theatre director Sara Single.
“One of the reasons we chose this play was because it is by a New Zealand playwright,” the director said.
She got in touch with Devon, who is based in Tauranga, to seek permission to change a few things in the play, and she said he was very adaptable and easy to work with.
It’s the story of a group of five ladies who get together for a school reunion.
“They share what’s happened through their lives, and there’s all sorts of intrigue… the question would be, where does the janitor fit in?”, she said.
With four evening shows and one matinee, the director told The Profile people would be in for some “great entertainment”.
It was different from watching a television or a movie on a big cinema screen, she said.
“It is quite different sitting in a theatre in front of people who are not very far from you but actually performing a play.”
Some people would be able to recognise some of the cast, she said.
“But they become quite different people when they’re on a stage and taking a part. And they take on the character of the person that they are playing.”
There were also members who hadn’t been on stage for a long time, she said, and had “come back to theatre”, and also one cast member who was changed out due to ill health.
Other cast members “pulled together” to make sure everything would work, and they also had a “very good crew” in charge of set design, she said.
“I’m very happy with the way the group has worked. They all support each other. And we’ve had an awful lot of laughs and giggles along the way, which is what it’s all about,” she said.
“It’s what we call our happy place. That’s our theatre.”
