All youth cast to perform

It’s almost time for a “kooky, creepy” and “altogether wonderful” production to kick off in the heart of Thames.
Thames MAD’s next production is set to take place at the Thames War Memorial Civic Centre from September 26 to October 3.
The Addams Family Musical – young@part is a “not-to-be-missed” night of comedy, music and heart for the entire family. But there’s a twist. Not only is the title an ode to youth, the show itself will feature a cast made up of only youth.
“I think it’s really cool because it’s the first time in about 10 years that MAD has been able to offer a full youth production. It’s 8-years-old to 18-years-old,” production marketing co-ordinator Samantha Connors told The Profile.

“It’s really special the fact that it’s just a youth production like there’s literally no adults in the whole cast. We do lots of youth productions with adults involved but this is purely just young people. They’ve got 56 kids involved from eight different schools,” she said. The production, which is run in conjunction with North Waikato Performing Arts (NoWA), is co-directed by NoWA director Mary Daugherty and Jo Haakma, who is also musical director.
Samantha said while there were 56 cast members on stage, there were other youth helping backstage, in the wardrobe and tech departments – “so there’s young people everywhere”.
For youth interested in getting involved in theatre, it was a good opportunity for them to start off in Mary’s drama club or the drama school to learn the skills and confidence to be able to do a show, Samantha said. “[The kids] already have those relationships from going to her drama club and the skills for where to stand on a stage or theatre etiquette, characterization, taking direction, all of these skills that are really important.”
