Students, staff and the wider Goldfields School whānau gathered on July 3 to not only celebrate Matariki but also to celebrate their uara (value) of the term – Kaitiakitanga (caring for each other, their school and their community).
Everyone celebrated in style too, dressed in orange to mark the occasion. The day kicked off with the Great Goldfields Trash Tramp, where the students went on a hikoi to the Centennial Park fields to pick up rubbish and “help keep our community clean”, Matua Caleb Koia-Hamling told The Profile.
“Back at kura we had Matariki and Kaitiakitanga activities including a recycling relay, a Matariki Speedy Super-Star race, face painting, Matariki art, and Matariki stories.” The day was followed by a disco and hāngi surrounded by whānau and friends.
“All of the activities were driven from our student voice at thestudent council, where they had a hui about what they would like at their Uara Day,” he said.
“Needless to say it went well, because the tamariki know best what the tamariki want.
“The vibes were awesome, the kai was tino reka (delicious), and the day was an amazing orange-filled success.
A huge thank you to all the kaiako, whānau and everyone else who helped make this day what it was.”
