Relax and laugh at comedy show

A night of entertainment is set for the Matatoki School community with a comedy showcase ready to bring some laughter, but there’s a catch – it’s just for the grown ups.
The Comedy for a Cause fundraiser event will showcase three of the ‘best comedians’ from the New Zealand International Comedy Festival: Keegan Govind, Nick Rado and Joel Vinsen on March 13 at the Matatoki School hall.
Gillian Downes, who is a member of Matatoki friends of the school, a group of parents who come together to support things within the school, said although the school was not new to fundraisers, this one was actually a bit “out of our wheelhouse”.
“We do more rural-based things, you know, like we’ve hosted a pig hunt and Calf Club is a good fundraiser for us. But to have something that’s a little bit more of a night out, it’s a little bit out of our wheelhouse,” she told The Profile.
While the proceeds from the event were not yet allocated toward one specific thing, Gillian said there were always extra things around the school that needed enhancement such as the school gardens and play spaces for the children.
Tickets for the event can be purchased online, and also include the grazing table for everyone to “mix and mingle”.

“We just thought it was an easy and really fun way to be social and stand around and chat and eat and drink,” she said.
“I really want to see a fun community thing. I’m actually secretly a little bit excited that it’s just adults only.
“Every parent puts heaps into their kids and so many school things are focused [on kids], which of course they should be. But it’s really nice every now and then to have something for the adults. It means we can all go and, you know, meet each other in that relaxed social situation,” she said.
“I think obviously there’s going to be some adult themes and things in there, which really, it’s a great icebreaker, isn’t it? For those new people in the community, it’s a great way to come and just relax and have a laugh about some possibly inappropriate things, some possibly appropriate things as well.”
