It was a top of the Waikato Division 2 clash between two unbeaten sides, Waihi and Claudelands Rovers, at Waihi College. And at half time the score line was 1-1.
A strong finishing Rovers side scored twice to win 3-1. Bryn Simpson smashed in a pile driver goal from a corner after 17 minutes for Waihi. The Waihi side came close to scoring a second with Ahman smashing a shot against an upright. Waihi keeper Budgie made three crucial saves with exceptional positioning and handling to keep Waihi ahead.
Rovers were gifted their equalising goal by Waihi with untidy defence in the penalty box 1-1 halftime. Rovers took the lead in the second half after only five minutes then wrapped the game up with their third. Waihi battled away but were up against a more efficient and precise Rovers. Cheers to independent referee Peter Thom. At Ngatea, the Waihi Mens Division 4 side had an excellent 4-2 win over Hauraki Plains. More good news on Sunday when the Waihi women hammered Northern United 7-1 in a goal laden match at Waihi College on Sunday.
Draw Saturday, May 11 will be the Mens Division 4 at Waihi College, Waihi v Melville United, 2.45pm kick off; Division 2 at Korikori Park, Hamilton: Waihi v Northern United Humblebees.
