Roads close after two serious crashes

UPDATE: Police can now confirm one person has died following the three-vehicle collision on Paeroa Kopu Road (SH26) Komata. Motorists are asked to continue to avoid the area as diversions are in place.

Two Coromandel roads are closed after two separate vehicle crashes on Friday afternoon – one in Hikutaia and one in Hikuai.

Police say they are responding to a three-vehicle collision on Paeroa Kōpū Road (State Highway 26) at Komata on September 22. Police were notified of the crash at 3:32pm.

Initial indications suggest there were serious injuries, Police said in a statement. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter also attended.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area as diversions are in place.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency said SH26 is closed between Kopu roundabout (SH25) and Hubbard Rd (SH26) until further notice. Delay your journey or consider alternative route.

Earlier, emergency services responded to a serious crash on State Highway 25, near the intersection with Hikuai Settlement Rd, after a single vehicle crash was reported to Police at 2.40pm.

One person is reported to be in a serious condition.

Police said the road will be blocked for some time and motorists are asked to take alternative routes where possible.
