Incoming cyclone prompts State of Emergency extension

Thames-Coromandel District Council (TCDC) has extended the district-wide State of Emergency for a further seven days in response to the incoming Cyclone Gabrielle.

Mayor Len Salt signed the declaration this morning after being briefed on the impact the cyclone could bring to the district.

The cyclone is due to arrive on Monday and pass through by Thursday, delivering heavy rain, storm surges and severe gale force winds.

Civil Defence Controller Garry Towler encouraged residents to stock up on essentials, medication, gas and batteries.

“Further briefings with MetService, Waikato Regional Council and Civil Defence are in progress, and we will provide an update later this afternoon,” he said.
