Bowlers make final push for new green

The Waihī Beach Memorial RSA Bowling Club is making a final push to raise $71,000 towards a $375,000 project to install an artificial bowling green.
The club has already saved 40 per cent of the total cost and raised a further 45 per cent through fundraising, and are now asking local families, individuals, and businesses to help bridge the gap.
Treasurer Peter Bullock told The Profile the club’s existing green cost more than $30,000 a year to maintain, with the amount of water required becoming a concern given climate change forecasts.
He said restrictions could mean the club having to truck in water to keep the green alive, while its reliance on a certified greenkeeper was another challenge if one was not available in the future.
An artificial surface would reduce those maintenance woes and allow the club to remain open year-round, avoiding a two-to-three month renovation shutdown each winter.
Peter also said the new green would drain more effectively following rainfall, reducing disruptions to play and creating more opportunities to host tournaments and community activities.
“We want this facility to be available for many generations into the future,” he said. “Long-term, we see the installation of lighting along with this new green a fantastic opportunity for Twilight or corporate bowls. Combined with the RSA meals and entertainment, it could be a community asset drawing people from outside the area to visit.”
The project is expected to cost around $375,000 by the time the club adds finishing touches like signage, a sweeper, vacuum, sheds, and scoreboards.
Peter said the club – located on Beach Rd – was looking to raise the remaining $71,000 in a final push, with the initial response to getting the project over the line “very encouraging”.
They are seeking local families, individuals, and businesses to sponsor a plaque on their planned sponsor board.
If the club secures the remaining funds by the end of the year, it hopes to have the new surface installed in April or May, 2027, with a supplier already confirmed.
“A new green will provide year-round bowling, reduce maintenance, and help keep our club viable, active, welcoming, and connected for generations to come,” Peter said.
“It’s about so much more than bowls – it’s about friendship, health and community spirit. A legacy for the future.”
Last week, the club found success on the bowling front, beating Mount Maunganui 147 points to 135 in their annual encounter to win back the Jim Shaw Memorial Trophy.
