For as long as I can remember, I’ve been told that the safe option is usually the best option. Get a good job, keep your head down and play it safe.
But I’ve always believed life is about taking risks – backing yourself, having a go and seeing where the road takes you.
So, in February, 2022, I took the biggest professional risk of my life and started HMS Plumbing in Thames.
HMS stands for Hayden Michael Stuart, but for me it has come to represent something much bigger: the opportunity to build something of my own and create a business where people come first.
The beginning certainly tested that decision.
I caught Covid-19 during my first week in business and had to isolate.
Then my first van spent four weeks off the road, leaving me navigating plumbing jobs from my car. It wasn’t quite the start I’d pictured, but we kept moving forward.
Today, HMS Plumbing is a small team of four – two tradesmen in vans, an office administrator and me – serving Thames and communities across the Coromandel Peninsula.
We’re proud of how far we’ve come, but we’re even more excited about where we’re going.
People are at the heart of HMS.
Our customers aren’t numbers or job sheets; they’re people, and we genuinely care about looking after them.
Our goal is to keep growing our team and serving more of our community, without losing that personal touch.
Four years ago, I took a risk.
Today, I’m grateful to everyone who took a chance on HMS.
