‘Boundaries spark imagination’

The month of October comes with double the inspiration at the Thames Art Gallery, where not one but two exhibitions are set to take place: Fit for an Envelope and the Spring Art Sale.
Fit for an Envelope returns as one of the gallery’s “most imaginative challenges”.
Artists are invited to create original works that are small enough to fit inside a standard letter-sized envelope.
Thames Society of Arts president Lisa Stent said she was excited to see just how creative artists could be within such a small format.
“An envelope might seem limiting, but it’s amazing how those boundaries spark imagination,” she told The Profile.

“Every piece has its own personality, and I love that visitors can get up close and discover all the tiny details.”
People can expect to find a “real mix” of styles, mediums and stories.
“From painting and mixed media to ceramics, copper, wood and unexpected creative ideas, there’ll be something that catches everyone’s eye. I hope people take their time, and view the exhibition with curiosity.”
Lisa, who is also an artist, will exhibit a few of her own art pieces.
She said the works were inspired by her Māori whakapapa and ongoing journey through Toi Marama, where she learned about traditional and contemporary Māori art with local Māori artist Walter Baker.
“My other piece is very layered, using collage and modelling paste along with some text and colour.”

The second exhibition that will run in October is the Spring Art Sale.
“Spring is all about fresh beginnings, and it’s a wonderful time to bring new art into your home,” Lisa said.
Thames Society of Arts members spring clean their studios and offer quality original artworks priced at a maximum of $250.
She said it was a great opportunity for both first-time buyers and seasoned collectors to discover work by talented local artists.
“We’re a volunteer-run gallery that loves welcoming both locals and visitors, and this exhibition is a little different because you’ll be able to experience two exhibitions side by side, the playful creativity of Fit for an Envelope alongside the Spring Art Sale, with plenty of original artwork to enjoy and, if something speaks to you, to take home.”
DETAILS: Visit both exhibitions during October at the Thames Art Gallery daily, 10am to 4pm.
