Waihī teenager Regan Le Cheminant has wrapped up his first midgets stock car season with a fifth-place title.
The 16-year-old received a special dispensation to move up to the F2 midgets class last year, making him the youngest midget driver in New Zealand.
On March 14 he tackled the course at Baypark Speedway in Tauranga, vying with 21 other cars in a bid for the Aotearoa A1F2 title. Regan, having qualified in the middle of the pack, fought a hard race and ultimately came away with the fifth-place finish.
“It was a bloody good night,” Regan commented on social media afterwards; “Super happy with this finish.”
Regan was also named the F2 Midgets New Zealand Rookie of the Year, and came fifth overall in the club for F2 Midget points. He had 39 races over the season, recording 37 finishes.
Regan said his first season with the F2 midgets has been “epic”, and he was now looking ahead to next season with an eye to racking up some feature wins and a possible podium finish.
“Absolutely love these things, they are a blast and can’t wait for the 2026/2027 season,” he said.
In the meantime, Regan has also taken up Muay Thai, training with Fox Den Combat in Paeroa.
His first fight on March 29 saw Regan take the bout in the second round.
“I’m pretty pumped – I just like fighting in the ring,” he said.
“Keeps me fit, keeps me pumped and active.”
