As a kaupapa Māori organisation, Te Korowai Hauora o Hauraki is the regional provider of ACC’s ‘Te Ara Tūhono’ Navigation service, known as Te Kawaurua here in the Hauraki rohe. This service was established in 2023 to provide free, independent manaaki, āwhina and tautoko for whānau accessing ACC*.
Te Kawaurua is here to deliver this support to any whānau who need it, pēpi to kaumātua, throughout the Hauraki rohe.
With whānau at the forefront of their mahi, Te Kawaurua aims to act as a kaiārahi (navigator) for those in need of ACC services, working alongside whānau to support and guide them on their ACC journey.
Sometimes it can be quite a challenge to understand the language of ACC, leaving whānau feeling unsure of which way to turn.
We engage kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face), get to know the whānau, and we take their queries and concerns back to our navigation escalation team within ACC. Together, with whānau alongside, we bring together a plan for the whānau and determine the next steps needed to achieve the best outcomes.
Our service name, Te Kawaurua is a symbolic reference to our manu and currents (au) that supported the navigation of waka from Hawaiki to Aotearoa. The significance of Kawau to our kaupapa is for their well-known attributes of patience, awareness and purposeful action – all of which help influence and guide this kaupapa.
Our aim is to give our whānau a voice and let them have the space to show their vulnerability and relieve a bit of stress onto us that we can help with and support with.
Whānau can self-refer or be referred from other health and/or community services.
Sometimes it’s just simply a kōrero.
Anyone needing ACC-related support can contact us directly and ask for help.
*ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) provides support and assistance when someone gets injured as the result of an accident.
