Paeroa shines onscreen for TV commercial

Paeroa’s Queen St and Princes St were transformed into a film set over the weekend, as car company Toyota turned the quiet side streets into a busy intersection for an advertising campaign.

The film shoot took place on June 6-9, with the facades of the businesses in the street transformed into an architect’s office and bakery.

Extra filming also took place in other areas, including the Ohinemuri Club on Normanby Rd, and outside the Paeroa Sports Club on Towers St.

The weather was changeable during the shoot, but Paeroa’s volunteer fire brigade was on standby to keep the road wetted down for a consistent look.

The film shoot brought several people into Paeroa for the four days they were on site, staying at local hotels and eating at local businesses.

Around 30 extras were also hired from Paeroa and the surrounding towns.

Toyota said the aim of the campaign was to celebrate mobility in New Zealand.

“We’re excited to be in Paeroa and appreciate the support of the community,” a Toyota spokesperson said.

“Paeroa was chosen for its location and how it fits with what the filming is aiming to achieve. Given Paeroa is a smaller town, the disruption of closing roads also has less impact than on larger towns and cities.

“Toyota hope that the Paeroa community are proud to be hosting the crew over a few days as they film.”

The spokesperson said the shoot involved “a respected production team, local authorities, and high-profile New Zealanders who reflect our values”.

Toyota would not confirm when the campaign would air.
