A new mural on a relocated classroom has given Matatoki a bold new splash of colour.
Brought to life by Thames artist Kylie Gunn, the mural is based on the students’ learnings about the area, teacher Hine Viskovich said.
It was funded by the Thames-Coromandel Creative Communities Scheme, administered by Creative Coromandel.
“Our students have learned not only how to research the history of our area, but also see their learnings expressed creatively in art form,” Hine said. “We can describe these things in words, but sometimes a picture is much more effective”.
The school now plans to visit Auckland Museum to see remnants of the Oruarangi Pā – a significant site on the Waihou River in Matatoki.
Students are also working with another local artist to design and paint a new waharoa [entranceway] that celebrates the past.
