Flooding in Waihī closes roads

Bad weather has caused road closures and flooding once again.

The Hauraki District Council announced the closure of  Golden Valley Road just after 6pm today, due to a road washout. The washout was caused by heavy rain, wind and flooding last night and today. The council advised the Golden Valley Road would be closed overnight while they assess the damage.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency also announced the closure of SH25 between Waihī and Whiritoa due to flooding, just after 3pm. The flooding receded shortly afterwards, and Waka Kotahi confirmed the road had reopened.

Elsewhere, the Whangamatā golf course was awash with spillage from nearby Wentworth River.

In Waihī Beach, flash flooding caused waist-high floodwaters, and several homes were evacuated, including eleven elder housing units.
