No Recycling for Hauraki, Thames-Coromandel

Kerbside recycling services will be unavailable in both the Thames Coromandel and Hauraki districts between March 20 and 31.

Smart Environmental Limited, the contractor for both districts, said it was unable to provide recycling and glass collection services during this time. A wave of Covid-19 among its workers, the ongoing national shortage of drivers were cited as factors in the loss of service. Additionally, a significant increase in travel time due to the State Highway 25A road closure meant that drivers were struggling to complete routes within their allotted logbook hours.

Both councils said that blue and yellow rubbish bags would continue to be collected during this period.

Residents are being asked to hold on to their recycling until services are resumed, or take it to a local transfer station for self-recycling.

Smart Environmental is currently recruiting for additional drivers, and interested parties can visit smartenvironmental.co.nz/contact-us for details.
