Frocks on Bikes postponed but optimistic

Waihi Beach’s Frocks on Bikes event was postponed due to the storm that swept through the Coromandel on Auckland Anniversary Weekend.

The event will now take place on February 5.

Frocks on bikes is back to brighten up Waihi Beach once again.

All ages and genders are welcome – the only requirements are a frock, a bike, and a helmet. Several routes are available including the casual ‘easy rider’ tour around the village, a 10km route, or for more serious athletes the 15km trail to Bowentown and back.

The event has taken place in Waihi Beach for the past eight years, with a break over the last two years due to COVID. Organiser Tee Carroll says it is an enjoyable day out for people of all ages and abilities.

“It’s just a fun, charitable event. It’s open to everyone. We get people from all over the North Island, some teens, some from Hamilton. Seeing everyone come and thoroughly enjoy themselves is a real highlight,” she said.

The frocks are a key part of the event. Men and women alike are dressed up to the nines in their frilly best, with the men in particular enjoying the opportunity to jazz it up a little.

“It’s a very, very interesting – well, quite hilarious – event.”

There will be prizes for best dressed and most decorated bike, as well as spot prizes. Entry to the event is a gold coin donation. In previous years frocks on bikes has raised funds for things such as bike racks for the village, although a cause for this year’s event has not yet been decided.
