Labour Weekend is fast approaching, and the Zonta Club of Thames is putting out their annual call for pre-loved books.
The Bookarama is a popular event on Thames’ annual calendar and this year will take place on October 23 and 24 at the St James Church Hall, with all funds raised going to charitable causes benefiting and empowering women.
“We want people’s clean, valued, loved books, and the sooner the better,” organisers Sue Bowden and Sue Christie told The Profile.
“Last year we raised about $6000, which is amazing considering that most of the books were $2 each.”
This year, some of the funds raised will go towards the Ovarian Cancer foundation of New Zealand for research, and some towards the organisation’s international projects.
The book sale will also benefit local women returning to education, with Zonta Thames awarding two scholarships this year – a $3000 grant for a 35-year-old Paeroa woman in her last year of nursing, and $1000 for a Coromandel woman in her mid-40s undertaking a social work degree.
“Zonta is about working together to build a better world for women and girls,” the women said.
“We really value the community’s support for this… We’re a very small group of people, so we have so many people that come in and help.
“And also the Never Surrender Boxing Health and Fitness who come in every year and move all our books… It’s quite a community-integrated process.”
