Colourful debut for Thames artist

Bursts of colour brightened up the walls of the Vessel Art Gallery in Thames for a local’s artistic debut.

Thames Lifestyler Jack Moskowitz opened his show, Jack’s Exhibition, on April 18 to a large supportive crowd of friends and family.

It was Jack’s first solo exhibition, and the culmination of around 15 months of hard work.

Jack’s Exhibition featured 32 artworks of portraits, landscapes, and cars. Several of the portraits were of Jack’s own family or people he knows; others were of celebrities he admires, such as rapper 50 Cent. The works are rendered in a number of different mediums, including pastels, watercolour, ink, and dye. But the defining theme throughout the exhibition was colour.

“My dad used to like colours as well,” said Jack, who said he gets a lot of his inspiration from his family.

“My dad was an artist and my grandpa from America was an artist – he used to do watercolour mostly.

“I have been doing art since I was five years old. Now I am 36, still doing art, and I will be doing art for my whole life.”

Jack received tutoring and support from a number of artists in preparation for the two-week exhibition, including Sue Clark, Laurie Spera, Amanda Ewing, Deb Brock, Nigel Sparrow, Samantha Claire, Simon Clark, Iona Matheson, and Leigh Ann Lomas from the Artsider workshop at the Supported Lifestyle Hauraki Trust.

The exhibition was a huge achievement for Jack, who said he felt really happy to see his art up on the gallery walls. It was also well-received by the public, with many of his pieces selling quickly.

Jack also included a number of screen-printed t-shirts in the exhibition. He has plans to print and sell more of his t-shirt designs through his Instagram page, and also hopes to stage another exhibition in the future, this time at a friend’s art gallery in Auckland.
