A fire broke out on State Highway 25 near Waitakaruru on October 23, caused by a collision between a car and a truck.
Emergency services were called to the crash around 11.20am.
The occupants all escaped the vehicles, but the truck subsequently caught fire.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand said two trucks from Ngatea were sent to extinguish the blaze.
Hato Hone St John confirmed one person was transported to Thames Hospital in a serious condition.
Later that day, a single car crashed on State Highway 2, leaving the road through Karangahake Gorge closed for just over an hour.
The car overturned between School Rd and Waitawheta Rd, Police said, and the sole occupant was transported to hospital with moderate injuries.
