It’s daffodil season, and as the brilliant yellow blossoms begin peeking out from paddocks and gardens, preparations are also underway for the annual Daffodil Day Luncheon at the Paeroa RSA.
The August 25 event will feature raffles, spot prizes, a catered meal from Lizzie’s Kitchen, and curated music from RSA member Ron Ogle.
Tickets are now available at Addictions Gift Shop on Normanby Rd.
Last year the luncheon organisers raised $4000 for the Cancer Society, with the event proceeds supplemented by sales of daffodil bunches and tomato plants.
Volunteers Elaine Lally and Margaret Ramshaw said they may have difficulty matching last year’s efforts.
“The weather is hampering our supply of daffodils this year,” they said. “The wind’s done damage, and the rain. But we can only do what we can do, we can’t plan the weather.”
Any offers of donated daffodils would be gratefully received, they said, and can be arranged by contacting Elaine on 022 465 9161.
Meanwhile, there are also other ways for people to get involved with supporting cancer sufferers.
Volunteers are being sought for two-hour shifts for the Cancer Society’s annual street appeal, and a support group meets at the St John Hall in Paeroa on the second Thursday of every month.
Elaine and Margaret hoped the people of Paeroa would show their support for the cause.
“There’s probably not many families that haven’t been affected by cancer, really,” Elaine said.
“Yeah, your life’s going along fine, then all of a sudden – boom,” Margaret added.
