The enviroschools team at Miller Ave School received its much awaited worm farm in the last week of term one from Hauraki District Council. Representatives Callie Hally and Deputy Mayor Paul Milner delivered the donated worm farm and helped the students construct it.
Zero waste facilitator Whaea Lenny was in house to talk to the select group on the construction and set up of the worm farm, and also deliver the all-important worms that had travelled all the way from Tauranga.
“The delivery fits in well with the new vegetable garden area that has been designed by Judith Munro, who is the learning assistant that guides the school’s Enviro School group,” Deputy principal Jane Lupton said.
“Students treated the worms with care and a karakia welcomed them as they were introduced to their new home. Fed and watered, it is now the hope of the group that the worm farm will not only help reduce food waste but also provide nutrients for the gardens. More worm farms are planned to assist with the food waste from the kura, however this is a great start.”
