Tattoo marches back into Paeroa

The Paeroa Highland Games and Tattoo is back for its 33rd year, with a full day of entertainment and competition set to delight visitors.

This year will see 16 pipe bands taking part – the most bands the event has had for a long time, organisers said. There will also be performances from special guests Boom Boom Deluxe, Thames High School’s Te Puni o Te Pito Mata and the Hamilton Caledonian Pipe Band.

The Games will begin as always with a variety of contests during the day. Performance contests will be scattered throughout Paeroa Domain, including solo piping, Highland dancing, solo drumming, and the pipe band contest. Meanwhile, athletes will compete in the Axemen’s Chopping Carnival and heavyweight field events, with young up-and-comers trying their hand at the Junior Highland Games events.

The Clan Village is also onsite again this year, along with market stalls, food stands, the Steampunk Tartan, and entertainment on the variety stage.

The 12-hour extravaganza will be rounded out by the Street March, as the amassed pipe bands march on to the main stage for a three-hour Evening Tattoo featuring music, dancing, the Caber Toss and Farmer’s Walk events and more.

DETAILS: February 14, 9am-9pm at Paeroa Domain. See www.paeroahighlandgames.co.nz for more.
