Musical Maestros

Paeroa’s Elim Church was a smorgasbord of colourful costumes, imaginative items and heartfelt tributes, as students from Goldfields School took to the stage for their music production extravaganza on September 17.

Dubbed the “Musical Maestros of Goldfields”, the show was a chance for students to experience performing for friends and whānau.

The items were carefully chosen to allow each student to shine according to their own abilities. Some danced or sang in groups, some performed solos or played instruments, and there were even jokes, a magic trick, a cooking skit and a live-action dinosaur sculpture creation.

The show opened with a slideshow dedicated to seven-year-old Rikaia Kiwikiwi, who died on September 12.

“He was one of our brightest students and his smile lit up the school,” principal Cam McKenzie said.

“That’s how we’re going to remember him.”

Other slideshows throughout the event showcased the students’ hard work in the classroom.

Preparation for the show took several months, with students needing to spend time becoming accustomed to the venue and stage as well as working hard on their items.

“The students love doing it,” Cam said.

“It does help with the students getting used to new environments, but we never know how they will react on the day. We do it for their whānau – they get to see how hard they’ve worked, and see them on the stage even just for a short time.”
