The sun beamed down on the final rugby league game of the season for the Hauraki Tigers Gold team on September 20 at Bedford Park, Matamata. Family and friends showed out to support the group of under-11-year-olds, who played with heart and soul for the last hoorah against the United Matamata Sports Club Storm team. The main things Coach Brons Walters said he enjoyed about the rugby league season was how he saw the kids grow and learn different skills. They showed up with smiles and enjoyed the sport, he said. Team manager Sam Fenton told The Profile the culture within rugby league was something truly special and she felt privileged to be part of the Hauraki Tigers Club for the season. “Our team has been amazing. We had a great mix of experienced players and first-timers, and the teamwork and dedication they showed was inspiring.” It was a team effort with parents who stepped in to help when needed, she said. “A huge thanks to all that made this season possible.”
