Turua Hall was packed on May 24 as more than 100 people arrived for a pink ribbon brunch, with the event raising $5000 for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.
This is the second year breast cancer survivor Tina Moir and her daughter Tracey Traynor have held the event, and they were thrilled with its success.
“This cause is close to our hearts as my mum, my nana and great aunty have all had it,” Tracey told The Profile.
“This was our second year hosting and our ticket sales doubled – we roughly had 110 women, men and kids attend.”
Tracey had been the major driver behind the brunch events, Tina said.
“When I got cancer, it really hit her hard. She was one of my biggest supporters,” Tina said.
“And she said, ‘mum, we should have [a pink ribbon event] because they really need help to be able to do the stuff that they actually do, the foundation.”
The brunch attendees were treated to a spread including cakes, slices, fruit and more.
There were also live auctions, raffles, and a spot prize for each person.
The raffles and auctions included items such as a quilt hand-made by Tina’s sister, travel vouchers, and three loads of firewood provided by Tracey’s dad, Smithy.
The pair said they were thankful for all their helpers and supporters, including the 50-plus sponsors who came on board to support the event.
“We couldn’t have done it without [them] all. We already have people booking in for next year,” Tracey said.
“It was an absolutely great day. I’m glad it’s over though, it’s been very tiring… but we’re already planning the next one,” Tina added.
