Veterans gathered in Tararu on May 8 to witness the rededication of the Tararu World War I and World War II Memorial Cairn.
The cairn, originally organised by Bupa Tararu resident Elizabeth Jones, was installed at the end of Wilson St in 2015 alongside a new set of stairs down to the beach.
It bore a plaque commemorating those killed in the wars.
The cairn was damaged earlier this year when the plaque was removed from the stone.
Veteran and historian Russell Skeet arranged for the cairn’s repair, and the subsequent rededication ceremony.
Around 30 people attended the solemn event, including Thames Coromandel District councillors Peter Revell, Robyn Sinclair, and Martin Rodley, along with four medalled veterans including Russell Skeet and Mike Anderson, and locals.
The 6th Battalion (Hauraki) Regimental Association laid a wreath of remembrance and sprigs of rosemary for the fallen servicemen.
